Before we knew the words for freedom,
we learned the words for rules.
We line up early, same height, same pace,
names on hooks, coats in rows.
Gold stars teach us what to want,
red lines teach us where not to go.
The system calls it education,
structure, care, a helping hand.
We learn to sit, we learn to wait,
we learn to fit the plan.
No force required, no fear involved,
just habits forming slow.
The system doesn’t break the child,
it shapes what the child will know.
One rule, one line, one correct way,
the system shows you how.
You’re not corrected when you follow,
you’re corrected when you ask how come.
One rule, one line, one correct way,
practice makes it stay.
The system doesn’t need to shout,
it trains you every day.
By the time we learn to read the signs,
we’ve learned which signs to trust.
We raise our hands to speak our minds,
permission first is a must.
The system rewards adjustment,
calls compliance being mature.
We stop asking what we’re allowed to want,
and start asking how to be sure.
What fits is called responsible,
what doesn’t is called a risk.
The system loves a quiet room
where no one needs to resist.
One rule, one line, one correct way,
the system shows you how.
You’re not corrected when you follow,
you’re corrected when you ask how come.
One rule, one line, one correct way,
practice makes it stay.
The system doesn’t need to shout,
it trains you every day.
Later we trade the classroom walls
for offices, forms, and screens.
Different words, the same instructions,
new uniforms, old routines.
The system calls it professionalism,
guidelines, policy, law.
You can do anything you want,
as long as it’s what they saw.
You learn the limits by watching
who advances and who stays.
The system doesn’t punish loudly,
it just withholds the way.
One complaint, one channel, one review,
the system handling its own.
You may speak, but only once,
and only through the phone.
One complaint, one channel, one review,
case resolved, file closed.
The system thanks you for your input,
then proceeds as proposed.
The system begins early.
It rewards adjustment over understanding.
Individuals learn to monitor themselves.
Stability is achieved through normalization.
Well-adjusted citizens require minimal control.
At some point you notice the pattern,
not all at once, not by surprise.
It’s in the way you soften your words
before they ever leave your mind.
The system doesn’t take your freedom,
it teaches you how to manage it.
You don’t feel locked inside the rules,
you feel wrong for questioning them.
I don’t remember choosing this,
but I remember learning it well.
The system calls me functional now.
I call it hard to tell.
One rule, one line, one correct way,
from the classroom to the court.
The system grows by repetition,
not by force, not by force.
One complaint, one channel, one review,
self-correcting, self-assured.
The system doesn’t need belief,
it only needs us trained.
The building hums, the lights stay on,
the system rests tonight.
Tomorrow someone new will learn
what normal means in practice.

A Short Story About Power
There was once a system that didn’t need to shout.
It didn’t threaten people or force them to obey. Instead, it built schools, offices, hospitals, and rules that all looked reasonable. Helpful, even. From the time people were children, the system taught them how to sit, when to speak, what was acceptable, and what was not.
Over time, people stopped needing to be told what to do. They had learned it. They corrected themselves. They compared themselves to others. They felt proud when they fit in, and ashamed when they didn’t.
The system didn’t punish very often. It didn’t have to. Most people already behaved the right way. And when someone complained, the system carefully reviewed the complaint—using its own rules, its own experts, its own language—and concluded that everything was working as intended.
This is what Michel Foucault described:
Power that hides itself inside normal life.
Power that works through routines, institutions, and expectations.
Power that succeeds best when people believe it is just “the way things are.”
In such a system, control doesn’t feel like control.
It feels like common sense.
